Christmas Tree Care Tips
Every year, there is always that office party, neighborhood get-together, or family reunion that brings everyone together, whether they like it or not, to the same place. And in that same place there is the one Christmas tree which everybody is supposed to admire and compliment. The problem comes when you're the one who's hosting the party and needs to get a tree up and decorated as soon as possible, while you're running around with a turkey and a string of other things to do. The first thing to do is to go out and buy your tree. There is a reason the old carpenters phrase ‘measure twice, cut once' is still well-used and this is one of them. A tree that is obviously too short or too wide will look out of place, and that's not what you want for your grand holiday event. If you decide to go for a real tree rather than plastic, then there's always the risk of some not-so-pretty spots. Before getting your money out, double check that there are no gaps or clusters of branches. If there is one or two on one side, then you can always face them towards a wall but it's something to be aware of. Some trees are easier to decorate than others too. The shorter the needles, the easier it will be. Whichever tree you decide to get, make sure you either have a sturdy stand for it at home, or can get one in time. For larger trees, the diameter of the base will be bigger and you'll need to work that in while considering your tree stand. Most importantly, your Christmas tree should be fresh and young. You can tell if a tree is fresh by feeling the leaves or needles. They should be bright and all the same shade of green. They should not fall off while touching them. If they fall off, look a touch on the brown side, or seem dry and pokey, then most likely, the tree won't last for your party or look half as good at it. No sadder site than a tired floppy chrissy tree Technorati Tags: Christmas Tree Care TipsPosted by Admin at 2008-06-04 16:23, Post Link

If your tree has sharp little needles on it, you'll need to be prepared for that too. They have a habit of falling off onto the floor if they get brushed up against one too many times, or are starting to get older. The location of your Christmas tree will play a big role too. Stay away from fireplaces, windows, or vents, that could circulate heat and raise the risk of a fire—the ultimate party-douser. Make sure to stay away from frequently populated areas like in the middle of the room or by a doorway. Decorations could get knocked or brushed off, and it can greatly lower the significance of your beautiful, seasonal tree. Once you have your tree at home—but not in place—double check everything. If there are any branches that aren't quite at the same level or angle as the others, don't hesitate to chop it around until it meets your standards. Don't go crazy with the saw or anything, but you paid your money, you can do whatever you like with it, including shaping or molding it to ‘perfection'. In the end, your Christmas tree might last a few weeks, but your flooring will (well, we can hope) last much, much longer, so when it comes to moving your tree into your home, put down large, plastic garbage bags, or old sheets in case someone drops the tree while moving it, or any needles fall off on the way. More to the point, it is a live tree and there will be bugs. They show up easier on a white sheet then they do on hardwood flooring. Once your tree is in place, with its tree stand supporting it, you might consider other forms of support. You can get another base to aid the stand, or, depending on the height and place of the room, consider tying the top of the tree with a clear string to the ceiling. One of the worst things that can happen is having your decorated tree fall flat on the floor—or worse, onto a guest—and having to re-do it then. If you have a smaller group, or one that you believe can handle things well, try making the candles as well. Each student needs one sheet of wax eighteen by eight and a half inches. Cut the sheet diagonally from eleven inches to seven inches. Take one piece and put a hair dryer on it for a few minutes until it's warm enough to be maneuverable and place a wick slightly longer than the longest side at the longest side and slowly roll it along until you get one candle with a spiraling upper half. If you do the same with the other piece of wax, you will then have a matching set. Christmas is celebrated in different ways around the world, and there are plenty of stories on the Internet and in books that can show your students the multiple cultures throughout the planet we call home. Try going for stories that the kids can relate to without going overboard with descriptions. Foreign customs can be hard to understand, so try for moderation. The Holiday greeting of "Merry Christmas" can be translated into millions of different languages, and each is native to a certain country or region. ‘Joyeux Noe"l' is French, ‘Mo'adim Lesimkha' is Hebrew, ‘Buon Natale' is Italian, and ‘Feliz Navidad' is Spanish. There are plenty of activities on the Internet and in books with lists of other languages. There are lots of games, matching, rhyming, and others, that you can create. And pronouncing the words is always fun too! Whatever you decide to do, you can try to incorporate it in only a few subjects. Not all kids are gung-ho and so keen on Christmas, and every day school work still needs to be around. But all in all, make sure it's fun. The best way to end school for the holiday break isn't just to tie up loose ends, but to make them into pretty bows too. Away in a manger, No crib for His bed The little Lord Jesus Laid down His sweet head The stars in the bright sky Looked down where He lay The little Lord Jesus Asleep on the hay The cattle are lowing The poor Baby wakes But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes I love Thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky And stay by my side, 'Til morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever And love me I pray Bless all the dear children In Thy tender care And take us to heaven To live with Thee there Technorati Tags: Lyrics for Away in a MangerPosted by Admin at 2008-06-04 16:22, Post Link

Christmas Stories and Activities for the Teacher
You can always tell Christmas is just around the corner when you go to your favorite shop and see reindeer-oriented decorations hung up right beside the Halloween ones in September.Lol, or is that just in London? As educators around the globe, it's our responsibility to push open the wonders of the world to our students, especially when the holidays come around. Students in younger grades constantly get distracted and teachers are the ones that get to scrounge around for fun Christmas activities to amuse them with. One of the most famous of said Christmas activities is to write a letter to Santa Claus. We see it happen in advertisements on the television, in the theaters, and it keeps that touch of belief left in us. The kids love it and it gets everyone in the spirit of the holidays. The best way is to get an older class to read the letters and respond to them. It might not seem as heart-warming, but the kids get ecstatic when they open their response. Another way to keep the younger kids occupied is the craft angle. Coloring might be good for the wee ones, but it won't work for long. Cutting out snowflakes by folding paper is a classic—and it works too! Tree decorations, cards, and snowmen will keep their little hands busy for a while at least. The older kids are a bit tougher. They consider themselves old enough so that the ole ‘be good or you'll get coal in the stocking' lecture doesn't work so much and they need those touch more specific tasks and instructions. Coloring just won't cut it, much to everyone's dismay. (Although there is a reason that snowflakes are such a classic!) If there's a spare bulletin board in the class, try making a mural out of construction paper. One group does the fireplace, another does Santa, another does a table with a glass of milk and cookies, another does the tree, and so on and so on until everything gets stapled up together to make one big mural. It's a great project because it shows teamwork at its best. Another fun project is to get a bunch of mini-pumpkins, the ones that you can hold in the palm of your hand. Cut out the middle of it, including the stem (you'll need a semi-sharp knife, which if why this is meant for older students), and then try to clean out the inside of the pumpkin without widening the hole. Then you get a pair of candles and can stick them inside to make beautiful festive candleholders. It doesn't take long and makes a good Christmas gift. 10 Christmas Movies that will get you in the Christmas Spirit
Movies and carols are one of the best tools to get you in the Spirit of Christmas. Whether you prefer old movies or the ones most recently released, all can put you in the right frame of mind to enjoy Christmas. Watch them with your children; get them involved in searching for Christmas movies on TV. Look in your favourite movie rental shop. Even check the second-hand shops for used movies. Some movies just mean Christmas is here. Relax in your favourite chair, pop some popcorn and gather the children around you, here is my list of favourite 10 Christmas movies that get me in the spirit. The timeless classic of; A Christmas Carol. I watch all versions in colour and in black and white, but I must confess that I love the colorized version. It teaches important lessons to children so this is one movie you might want to add to your collection of Christmas movies. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This is a classic and until you hear the song sang by Burl Ives, it just isn't Christmas yet. The best part is the abominable snowman putting the Christmas star on the tree. Miracle on 34th Street is another one of those must see movies at Christmas time. The timeless story of the little girl wondering if there really is a Santa Clause is as endearing now as when it was first released. A Timeless classic. It's a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart shining performance, as the good-hearted George Bailey is one that I truly love. When his guardian angel-in-training shows up to talk him out of jumping off the bridge and shows him what the town would be like if he'd never been born. The outpouring of love that George finds is a splendid example of the giving nature of people at Christmas.
